The wait is almost over for this years firmus energy Newry Triathlon which will take place in the city this weekend, with athletes coming from all over Northern Ireland and Ireland to take part in one of the fastest sprint triathlons in Ireland.
After months of preparation and training the event is finally here and there is still time for last minute sign ups for budding traithletes. The orgasniers have added new cycle and running routes to the course which includes a new bridge across the Newry Canal for the 5k run.
Headline sponsor firmus energy have again joined up with Newry Business Improvement District (BID) and Newry Mourne and Down District Council to support this popular event.
Angeline Murphy from firmus energy commented: “We are delighted to continue our support for the event again this year and are looking forward to even more participants signing up, bringing many new visitors to the City. The firmus energy Newry City Triathlon is regarded as the fastest sprint triathlon in Ireland and is a great opportunity for triathletes to achieve personal bests due to the fast, flat route of the race as well as being a fun course for novices. Also, it is not every day that people get the chance to swim in the Canal.
“firmus energy has been working in the Newry area since 2007 and has connected around 3,000 business and residential customers to natural gas. We work hard to become involved in the communities that we serve and supporting this triathlon is just one of the ways we are giving back to the Newry area.
“We look forward to working closely with the BID and building on the success of last year’s firmus energy City of Newry Triathlon – we would urge people to register as soon as possible to ensure they secure a space on one of the most sought after triathlons in NI.”
The hotly contested course will feature a swim in the Newry Canal (750m), followed by a 20k cycle and finishing up with a 5k run. The event promises to be packed with action and is a great family day out where supporters can line out to watch participants take on the course.
Eamonn Connolly, Manager of Newry BID said: “We are excited to be back for our second year organising the firmus energy Newry City Triathlon, last year was a huge success and we hope to build on that this year with new bike and run routes, including a unique bridge across the water as part of the run route, we know this is something those signed up are extremely excited for.
“We are delighted to have the support once again from firmus energy and Newry, Mourne and Down District Council on creating such a fantastic event, and attracting both triathletes and spectators to Newry. We expect to see some of the best triathletes in the country heading to Newry to get their personal best on Sunday and we look encourage those interested to register now at Newry.com”.
The triathlon will take place on Sunday 26th August 2018 commencing from the Newry Canal at Albert Basin Newry at 11am. There will be some disruptions to traffic on the day and the public are advised to follow all traffic signs and diversions.
